Who we are

About the farm

We work a 100 acre certified organic mixed farm located in Kincardine, Ontario. We have a large herb  garden where we mainly grow medicinal and culinary herbs which are used to make herbal teas and blends, healing creams and salves, and culinary blends. We also raise meat goats, feed dairy replacement heifers and maintain a flock of hens.

Our products can be purchased online, at the farm gate or at the Kincardine Farmer's Market, which runs from May to October.

Our goal is to farm as environmentally and animal friendly as possible and to produce quality local food. We believe and support Eat Fresh, Eat Healthy, Buy Local and Support Small Farmers.

About the farmers and their families

My husband and I immigrated to Canada in 1988 with our daughter Kathrin who was 2 years old at the time. We bought a 100 acre farm in Kincardine, Ontario, with the help of other Swiss farmers living in Canada.

Before leaving Switzerland, I had completed an apprenticeship as an organic farmer and my husband had been teaching Chemistry and Physics.

We were very excited finally to have our own farm and for our dream of becoming organic farmers to come true. We had not been able to find suitable farm to buy in Switzerland.

From the start, we worked the land organically and planted lots of trees as windbreaks.

We began by raising beef cows and pigs, later on we bought cream quota which we could convert to milk quota in 1995.

In the meantime, Jessica and Peter were born.

We were quite happy with our achievements and hoped the dairy cows eventually would give us a steady farm income.

In 2000 my husband had a fatal car accident. Nevertheless, I continued to run our small dairy operation with my 3 children.

14 years later, after Kathrin my oldest daughter graduated as a veterinarian, we bought another 50-acre farm.

My second daughter Jessica, who gained a Master’s Degree in Soil Science, moved to BC to work as an Analytical Chemistry Technician for the Agassiz Research and Development Centre. She has a daughter who is now 4 years old.

My son Peter decided to make a career as an engineer with the Salford Group Inc., who are global leaders in the engineering and manufacturing of Tillage and Application Equipment.

In 2016, Kathrin and her partner Dan started milking dairy cows on their 50-acre farm. They were able to buy a milk quota through the new DFO Organic Entrants Milk Program. They are milking between 40 and 50 cows and are milk producers for Harmony Milk. They have a daughter who is 5 years old.

I sold my dairy cows in 2018 as it was too much work milking dairy cows on 2 different farms. The barns, the pasture and some extra land are now rented out to Kathrin’s family, who use them to raise their replacement heifers and produce feed for the dairy cows.

I am still working my farm with the help of my children but I now focus on my herb garden. It gets bigger every year and in addition I keep a flock of hens for the production of free-range eggs and raise goats for meat.

Susie's interests

Since I was a teenager, I have been interested in Native and Medicinal Herbs and alternative medicine. In Switzerland I spent a lot of time collecting and identifying the Swiss medicinal herbs and researching how herbs can benefit our health.  I have continued this interest here in Canada.

In Switzerland, I also worked on a farm that grows herbs for “Ricola”, a Swiss company known world-wide for its production of Herbal Cough Suppressants and Throat Drops.

I have a basic knowledge of Homeopathic and Bachblueten remedies and make tincture and oils from the medicinal plants.

My main focus is on Traditional Herbalism, Medical Astrology and biodynamic farming.

My knowledge in the production and uses of medicinal and culinary herbs continues to expand.
